BERLIN (AP) – The Federal Prosecutor’s Office has accused a German woman of membership in two foreign terrorist groups, of violating the weapons law and of accusing her son of being a fighter in a foreign terrorist group.
The German Federal Prosecutor’s Office announced on Tuesday that Stefanie A., whose last name was kept secret for data protection reasons, left Germany with her then 13-year-old son in 2016 to live with her husband on Syrian territory, which was then under the control of the Islamic State.
She first joined the terrorist organization Jund al-Aqsa and later the Islamic State (IS). She is accused of volunteering her son to Jund al-Aqsa and ISIS as a fighter.
Shortly after arriving in Raqqa, Syria, in 2017, the defendant joined ISIS, initially living with her husband in Raqqa and running his household. The couple, financially supported by IS, provided their son to the group. He completed military training and was called up for combat duty. In March 2018, he was killed in a bomb attack at the age of 15, according to a statement by the public prosecutor.
A. herself was equipped with an explosive belt and carried a rifle while she was a member of IS. She and her husband remained loyal to the Islamic State until the end of the reign and surrendered to the Kurdish troops in February 2019. She was arrested when she arrived in Germany in March.
