Governor Greg Abbott announced today that Texas Instruments (TI) has selected Sherman as the location for its next 300mm fab. TI is a Dallas-based, publicly traded semiconductor company that makes processing chips. 300 mm semiconductor wafers will be produced in the new production facilities, and construction of the first and second fabs will begin in 2022. Production of the first system is planned to start as early as 2025. With the option of up to four fabs, the company could employ up to 3,000 people in Sherman and invest almost 30 billion US dollars in the coming decades.
“TI has been a member of the strong Made in Texas brand for more than 90 years, and we are proud that the company chose to continue its innovation legacy in the Lone Star State,” said Governor Abbott. “This historic investment will not only bring billions of dollars in capital investments and thousands of new jobs to North Texas, but will also make Texas a national leader in semiconductor manufacturing while strengthening the domestic semiconductor supply chain. I thank TI for choosing Sherman as their location “for up to four new semiconductor manufacturing facilities as we work together to keep Texas a global hub for innovation in advanced technology and manufacturing.”
“Our commitment to North Texas has spanned more than 90 years and this decision is testament to our strong partnership and investment in the Sherman community,” said Rich Templeton, chairman, president and CEO of TI. “TI’s future 300mm analog and embedded processing fabs at the Sherman site are part of our long-term capacity planning to further strengthen our competitive advantage in manufacturing and technology and support our customers’ demand for decades to come.”
“Texas has built a global reputation for growth policies, a highly adaptable workforce, and abundant natural resources, all of which were instrumental in TI’s decision to make this massive investment in American manufacturing right here in Sherman,” said Mayor David Plyler, “Even among its peers in the Lone Star State, Sherman has both the infrastructure and quality of life that make it stand out. We thank God that Texas Instruments made the decision to join our growing, historic, and business-friendly community. “
TI was founded in Dallas in 1930 and has offices in Richardson, Sherman and Houston. Ranked # 210 on the Fortune 500 company list, TI is one of the state’s largest employers and the only Texas-based semiconductor company.
