The city of Orangeburg receives a scholarship from the SC Department of Public Safety to fund an existing position of traffic control officer.
The grant has a total value of $ 83,383 and will be used for salary, benefits and up to $ 11,000 in travel expenses, city administrator Sidney Evering said.
The council has authorized Evering to come to an agreement on receiving the grant during Tuesday’s city council meeting.
Evering said he will meet with Charles Austin, interim director of Orangeburg’s public security department, to discuss the details of the position.

The scholarship was awarded for the period from October 1st to September 30th. This coincides with the city’s budget year.
The city received a similar grant last year to fund the same position. It expired on September 30th.
No local agreement is required for the grant.

The officer paid by the position is said to focus on road safety. The aim is to reduce dangerous driving and vehicle accidents and to increase the use of child seats and seat belts.
