Here’s how Houston ranks among the country’s greenest cities
[ad_1]
Houston may be the energy capital of the world, but apparently not the capital of the “green”.
Bayou City ranks 93rd out of the 100 largest US cities in a new WalletHub ranking of the country’s greenest places. Houston took the same spot in last year’s rankings. Not only is Houston the eighth worst city in the 2021 study, it’s also the lowest-ranking city in Texas.
To determine which cities are promoting green lifestyles, WalletHub compared the 100 largest cities using 28 key “green” indicators. These factors include greenhouse gas emissions per capita, the number of smart energy policies and initiatives, and green job opportunities.
Unfortunately, Houston’s overall performance is not impressive. Here is a selection, with No. 1 being best, No. 50 being average, and No. 100 being worst:
Excessive fuel consumption per year, No. 97.
Greenhouse Gas Emissions Per Capita, No. 94. Houston ranks among the worst greenhouse gas emissions with five other cities.
Median Air Quality Index, No. 72.
Proportion of commuters who drive a car, No. 54.
Proportion of green space, No. 37.
Farmer’s Markets Per Capita, No. 35.
Accessibility, No. 34.
This is what happened to other cities in Texas:
Austin, No. 26.
Garland, No. 44.
San Antonio, No. 46
Laredo, no.68.
El Paso, No. 69.
Irving, no.74.
Apartment, No. 79.
Lubbock, No. 83.
Arlington, No. 85.
Dallas, No. 89.
Corpus Christi, No. 90.
San Diego tops the WalletHub list. While Houston hangs at the bottom of WalletHub’s rankings, government and business leaders in the area strive to make Houston greener.
