Houston-area Blood Bros BBQ in Bellaire makes New York Times’ top 50 restaurants list

Blood Bros. was listed on the New York Times restaurant list, a collection of the 50 Most Exciting Restaurants in the United States. The Bellaire Barbecue Joint was the only restaurant in the Houston area to make the list, and it’s one of five Texan places to highlight in history.

Blood Bros has earned local and national recognition for a menu of traditional grilled dishes on the one hand and a collection of Asian-inspired spin-offs developed by brothers Robin and Terry Wong and Pitmaster Quy Hoang on the other.

“The menu at this suburban Houston mall grill restaurant, which changes daily, is a product of the seemingly endless Texas barbecue cooking ideas swirling through the minds of owners and staff,” The Times wrote. “One day with brisket burned-end steamed buns and smoked chicken karaage. The next, char siu pork banh mi and Thai boudin balls with green curry Robin Wong. But these disruptors don’t despise the classics: their traditional brisket, ribs and homemade sausages are excellent and available every day. ”

Recognition on the national list comes shortly after Blood Bros opened a location at Resorts World in Las Vegas, a 24,000-square-foot food hall with 16 restaurants serving international cuisine. After opening in 2018, it was voted one of the Best New Restaurants in 2019 by CultureMap, Bon Appétit, and Texas Monthly.

Other Texas restaurants that made the New York Times list include:

  • Roots southern table: Located near Dallas in Farmer’s Branch, the soul food eatery is inspired by chef Tiffany Derry’s Louisiana background, with dishes like gumbo, cornbread, and roasted potatoes with duck fat.
  • Fish Lonja: Chef and owner Alejandro Paredes opened the seafood restaurant just a few years after his success with Carnitas Lonja in San Antonio. Fish Lonja is known for fresh seafood with a Mexican influence.
  • Sylvias: The Brownsville staple is a taco eatery also known for dishes like machacado con huevo a la Mexicana.
  • Birdies: The Austin wine-themed counter-service restaurant offers dishes such as steak tartare, roasted eggplant, and gold-encrusted panis.
