Houston’s ranking on US News and World Report’s “2020-21 Best Places to Live in the United States” list has dropped 12 places.

The list ranks the top 150 metropolitan areas in the US based on “affordability, labor market, quality of life, attractiveness and net migration”.

US News stated that this year’s rankings reflect not only the factors mentioned above, but also how COVID-19 hit these areas and how cities responded to the virus.

Houston was ranked 39th this year, compared to 27th last year.

Austin, Texas ranked first in the Texas cities list, ranking 5th compared to its previous 3rd place.

While Houstonians speculate as to why Houston dropped the ball this year, the Kinder Rice Institute for Urban Research may have provided an answer. The research institute recently released data on the net evacuation rate in Houston.

According to the data, Houston extracts rose 41 percent in 2020.

Whatever the reason for the drop in rankings, Houston still ranks third on the list of Best Cities in Texas – commended for its award-winning restaurants by Christine Hall, a local expert.

Boulder, Colorado was voted # 1 on the US News and World Report lists.
