The VW ID.4 contains more than 50 Infineon semiconductors, including power semiconductors, microcontrollers and driver ICs. The heart of the electric drive train is a power module from the HybridPACK ™ Drive product family for converting energy between the battery and the motor. In addition to the car, semiconductors from Infineon play an important role in the electrical charging infrastructure and enable faster charging.
“Making the world easier, safer and greener with our technology is Infineon’s mission,” said Lars Ullrich, Vice President Automotive, Infineon Technologies Americas. “Infineon is committed to being CO2 neutral by 2030, and electric vehicles and the electrification of vehicles are also big steps towards lower CO2 emissions. This world record further confirms that energy-efficient electric vehicles have no range restrictions and that the charging infrastructure is accessible throughout the country. We are excited about this great achievement made possible by Infineon’s reliable electronics and we welcome the drivers and team support around the world to make this possible. “
Infineon drives e-mobility
Infineon offers the broadest automotive portfolio of products and technologies in the semiconductor industry, including power semiconductors, which are at the heart of e-mobility. In addition to comprehensive system competence for electric drives, Infineon offers complete system solutions for all xEV segments, including pure electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles and electric vehicles based on the emerging hydrogen technology. Infineon’s power semiconductors are now in use in around 10 million electrified cars. Almost six million plug-in hybrids and battery-electric vehicles are to be produced in 2021. Infineon estimates that around half of the inverters installed in these vehicles are equipped with the company’s chips and modules. By the end of this decade, more than 60% of all newly registered vehicles should be partially or fully electric.
The ID.4 is the first fully electric SUV from Volkswagen and the brand’s first worldwide electric vehicle. When launched in the US, it is powered by an 82 kWh (gross) battery pack and has an EPA estimated range of 250 miles in ID.4 1st Edition and Pro S rear-wheel drive models. At a public DC fast charging station with 125 kW charging power, the ID.4 can be charged from five to 80 percent in around 38 minutes.
