In this year’s STEMdex, RCLCO extended its search to the 50 largest metropolitan areas in The United States. The ten cities topping the list this year are Denver, Seattle, Austin, San Francisco, Washington, DC, San Jose, Raleigh, Boston, Portland, and Salt Lake City. The highlights of this year’s list include:
- After 3rd place in 2020, Denver moved to the top due to strong economic tailwinds, the quality of the workforce and the quality of life.
- Austin, Texasafter recently celebrating news of a major relocation of Tesla headquarters, it ranks again in the top 3 on the STEMdex.
- The only states with multiple cities in the top 20 are Texas, California (three cities each) and North Carolina (two cities).
- Boston, San Diego, Minneapolis, and Washington, DC entered the top 20 for the first time as strong economic trends point to robust future growth.
“Although it is far too early to fully assess how the COVID-19 pandemic and any current or future variants will continue to affect our daily lives, another year of data has given us confidence in the growth prospects for STEM- Jobs, especially in the regions highlighted by STEMdex 2021, “said Gregg Logan, Managing Director of RCLCO. In the most recent 10-Year Industry Employment Projections published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (published in September 2021 with projections up to 2030), above-average employment growth is forecast, especially for STEM jobs.
RCLCO partnered with CapRidge Partners in 2016 to create the STEMdex as a tool to identify which of the largest metropolitan areas in The United States are prepared for growth in STEM-based industries. The analysis focuses on metrics in four main areas that RCLCO believes are of paramount importance to STEM employment growth: STEM trends / economic drivers (including population growth metrics, industry growth and location ratio metrics, and STEM wages), labor quality (including Millennial household growth and level of education), quality of life / health (including cost of living, commuting times, walking times, and more), and business climate (including office costs, local tax environment, and other metrics). In total, RCLCO has identified and weighted 24 different indicators which, in their opinion, best characterize the four main categories and quantify their effects on the STEM labor market.
