Austin City Limits 2021: Local businesses wrap up Weekend One

It is estimated that ACL attracts more than 70,000 people per day of the festival. Weekend 2 starts on Friday October 8th.

As the unofficial gateway to Zilker Park, the shops on Barton Springs Road are busy this weekend.

This is nothing new to the Ski Shores Cafe.

“We’ve been on this road with different concepts for about 10 years, so we’ve been doing this for ACL for about 10-11 years,” said Cory Myers, Operations Manager at Ski Shores Cafe.

However, Myers has noticed some differences that he attributes to the pandemic. He said that while sales are about double the average weekend, he estimates they are about 15-20% less than previous ACL weekends.

“We don’t see that many people on the streets, but we see a good flow and the people who come in are just excited to be out and at a festival again,” Myers said. “Definitely a different demographic and a different mood, but everyone is having fun.”

Next door at Austin Eastciders, employees are working on their very first ACL festival.

Thousands gathered Friday and Saturday to see the headliners of Weekend One, including Miley Cyrus and Billie Eilish.

“We weren’t sure what to expect,” said assistant manager Emily Murphy. “It was very brisk and smooth … and it’s really cool to see everyone come out.”

Both Austin Eastciders and Ski Shores Cafe have also made adjustments to make up for the staff shortage.

“It’s cool to see everyone come out after the pandemic, have fun again, and with our terrace we can socially distance people and still have a great time,” said Murphy.

On the street, Patrick Larussa tried to lead hungry festival-goers from MacDonald’s to something healthier.

“We stood at the curb, just said hello and handed out some of our sea moss smoothies,” said Larussa.

Larussa runs ATX FOOD CO., A vegan food truck off South Lamar that brings its own challenges.

“When we pop like this morning or yesterday during the day, we have five or six or even one at each station,” he said. “We just vibrate and try to communicate because the food truck is very tight.”
