Local food truck brings a taste of Europe to Austin

With so much diversity and real estate listings across the city, Austin is the perfect place to start a new business. Food trucks in particular are on the rise as Austin grows, and many different types of food are adopting the format. The rye bread bar on South Congress Avenue brings delicious crepes, sandwiches and drinks to South Austin for French food and bartending.
Bryce McMillan and Malou Rasmussen, who have toured the country, have a lot of experience in introducing their food truck to new environments. Rasmussen and McMillan met while traveling in Asia in 2019 and decided to go on an adventure to combine their love of food and travel. After repairing a 1950s RV, they were ready to hit the streets and start their business.
“We’re both bartenders by nature and have always worked in the food and beverage industry,” said Rasmussen. I lived between Italy and France where I learned a lot about food. I really wanted to bring European cuisine here to America. ”
After McMillan and Rasmussen made their trip to the United States, the first step was figuring out what they wanted to do.
“Georgia was the first time I lived in America,” said Rasmussen. “We wanted to explore America more and find areas that [were] a bit more open or a relaxed environment in which we felt that our business could fit. ”
The duo traveled and attended events in Florida, New Orleans, and Oklahoma before heading to San Antonio. After being stuck in San Antonio during the 2021 winter storm, Rasmussen and McMillan decided to settle in Austin.
“The people here are a little more open-minded and very warm. Austin is known for helping small businesses and that really appealed to us, ”said Rasmussen.
The Rye Bread Bar offers a variety of crepes and sandwiches, including vegetable and turkey paninis, breakfast crepes and dessert crepes. The Rye Bread Bar brings her love for the bartender to the South Congress and offers delicious mocktails and agua frescas with flavors of passion fruit raspberry, mango kiwi and strawberry pineapple coconut.
Not only do they offer delicious food, the truck plans to bring live comedy events to their place, Soco Live.
“Our plan is to do live music, build a bigger stage, and then do more stand-up comedy on a regular basis,” said Rasmussen. “After that we want to try to create some open mic events that [are] now very popular in Austin. “
The Rye Bread Bar plans to stay in Austin for the foreseeable future, with more and more events happening. This food truck is perfect for relaxing outside and sampling delicious European-style food.
