Marly H. Flanders, 80
Marly H. Flanders, 80, of Austin, Minnesota, died on November 6, 2021 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home in Austin.
Marly Homer was born on October 14, 1941 in Austin, Minnesota to Leslie and Mabel (Schmidt) Flanders and attended Austin Public Schools. On February 8, 1964, he married Cheryl Olsen at Hayward Lutheran Church in Hayward, Minnesota. He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church.
Marly was like the energy-guzzling bunny who always had two or three jobs at the same time. He worked at Weyerhaeuser until 1967 and then started at the Hormel Foods Company, where he worked from 1967 to 1979. In 1979 he pursued his dream and bought North Main Liquor and changed the name to Marly’s North Main Liquor. Many friendships with customers and employees were made here. Many nights were spent in the back room holding a board meeting and discussing the day’s events. Nothing was ever really resolved, but many problems certainly started. He owned and operated the liquor store until 1992 when the opportunity arose to convert the building into an office, jumped on it, and again became a landlord. Then he got another job on the bucket list and became a car salesman at Usems Chevrolet in Austin. He made many new friends again and sold cars to many old friends; He was always the honest guy who wanted to do the best for the customer. While working for Usems, he also had his morning newspaper delivery job and drove school buses. Although he worked a lot during those years, he also played a lot, enjoying his cars, motorcycles, and many years of boating in Lake City. He was always the life of the party.
He sold cars until March 1996 when he suffered a major stroke that forced him to retire. The stroke took much of his mobility, but worse his speech; It was very difficult for a man who had spent his whole life talking, but he sang a song anyway and let it go with a few swear words.
His life slowed after the stroke, but he was still busy helping with the daycare children. He was a great rocker and feeder, and many children slept in his arms, including his grandchildren. He also enjoyed watching and walking NASCAR races and ice fishing with his sons and their friends. He was just as part of the group as everyone. Sundays were definitely football and racing for Vikings.
When the grandchildren got old enough he was seen at all the hockey games, dance competitions, plays and musicals and everything else and he wouldn’t miss much if he didn’t have to. And as if that wasn’t enough, he also enjoyed driving around and looking at what he could see. Staying in one place wasn’t in his lifestyle. His smile and his funny manner are missed by everyone.
In death he was preceded by his parents, four sisters Madlyn, Corrine, Isabelle and Geraldine, two brothers, Clayton and Elders / Slim and parents-in-law, Ray and Charlotte Olsen.
Marly leaves behind his wife Cheryl Flanders, Austin MN; sons: Dan Flanders, Austin MN; Mike (Amy) Flanders, Austin MN; Al (Rachel) Flanders, Rosemount, MN; Grandchildren: Hannah, Holly, Heidi, Bryar, Ryan, Kaitlyn, Kyler, Keagan, and Avery; Brother: Alvin (Janet) Flanders, Fridley MN; Sister-in-Law: Pat Flanders, Austin, MN and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 12th at 1:00 p.m. in the Clasen Jordan Mortuary, under the direction of Reverend Scott Meyer. The visit takes place on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Clasen-Jordan morgue. The burial takes place in the Grandview Cemetery.
