Martindale man arrested for the murder of a man parked in his driveway

Adil Dghoughi was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. The 31-year-old later died of his injuries.

A Martindale man surrendered at the Caldwell County Jail Friday. He is accused of murdering a 31-year-old Moroccan immigrant.

Terry Turner, 65, fatally shot and killed Adil Dghoughi just after 3:40 a.m. on Monday, October 11th.

Turner told law enforcement that he woke up to use the toilet when he noticed that Dghoughi’s vehicle was parked in his driveway with the headlights off. The vehicle was parked next to his pickup, which has a trailer attached to it. Turner ran to his bedroom, grabbed his pistol, and ran back outside. At the time, Turner said Dghoughi turned on his headlights and “quickly” reset the vehicle. Turner chased after him.

At the end of the driveway, the vehicle turned right when Dghoughi pulled in to drive off. Turner said at the time that he hit Dghoughi’s window twice with his gun and then shot him.

Turner returned to his house where he called 9-1-1. He said to the dispatcher, “I just killed a guy.” He added that he “tried to pull a gun on me, I shot.” Again he told the dispatcher that Dghoughi had a gun. He said, “He started running away and I ran after him. He pointed a gun at me and I shot.”

“[Turner] pursued and murdered him. “Dghoughi’s friend Sarah Todd told FOX 7 Austin.

According to Mehdi Cherkaoui, a lawyer representing Dghoughi’s family, Dghoughi’s windows were closed when he was shot dead.

“The bullet penetrated [Dghoughi’s] Hand before it entered his head and the bullet came out of the victim’s head and there was actually enough force to fly through the passenger window, “Cherkaoui said.

Todd told FOX 7 Austin that she and Dghoughi were staying at their cousin’s house in Converse on the evening of October 10th after a barbecue. Shortly after midnight on October 11th, he told her that he wanted to go and was not comfortable. He drove in her car while she slept and drove to her house in Maxwell. Todd’s CCTV cameras show that Dghoughi was parked in her driveway for about two hours. He left the house around 3 a.m. He was killed about 40 minutes later.

Turner’s Martindale home is seven minutes from Todds. Todd says she isn’t sure why Dghoughi was in the neighborhood, but she isn’t surprised either. “His habits were driving around and decompressing and listening to music.” She explained.

Turner’s fate is in the hands of a Caldwell County grand jury. In the coming weeks they will decide whether or not he will be charged with murder.

“You can’t just go into your yard and execute someone for sitting in their vehicle … Why would you do this? Why leave your home, the security of your home? You were safe inside, but you were instead that was on the offensive. ” said Todd.

Detectives turned to Terry Turner’s attorney and were advised that Turner was going to face the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office. (Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office)

Turner wasn’t arrested until Thursday when an arrest warrant was issued against him. He surrendered on Friday, eleven days after the shooting. Todd tells FOX 7 Austin that she is now questioning Texas’ Standing your Ground Law.

“Something like that shouldn’t even have been questioned. If someone is murdered, be it on the property or on the street, they should be automatically arrested. You murdered someone. You executed him and you released the man? Days later do we arrest him now? “She added,” I won’t stop fighting until we get more gun control in the state of Texas. It’s not OK. That could have been anyone’s child. “

Dghoughi immigrated to the United States more than a decade ago to continue his education. He holds a Masters of Business Administration from Johnson and Wales University. Most recently he lived in Austin. His family told FOX 7 Austin that he was an organ donor.
