Maryland Seafood Chain Mason’s Famous Lobster Rolls Is Opening in Texas

Maryland-based fast-casual seafood chain Mason’s Famous Lobster Rolls will open its first Texas location in the Austin area in mid-August. This is one of two planned locations in the Austin area, with more to come in the rest of the state. The new restaurant will be located at 200 Congress Avenue from mid-August (takes over the address of the New American Restaurant Second Bar + Kitchen, which was closed in November 2020 after ten years).

Mason’s menu focuses on lobster rolls with five main dishes: the cold lobster with mayonnaise and butter; the warm Connecticut style with butter; a lobster, bacon and lettuce tomato; a lobster salad sandwich and a non-lobster iteration of jumbo shrimp. Then there are lobster salads, grilled lobster cheese, lobster mac and cheese and lobster bisque. The lobster is from Maine.

Other non-lobster products include clam soup, potato salad, and, for kids, hot dogs and plain grilled cheese. In terms of beverages, there are organic sodas from Maine Root Beverages as well as beer and wine.

The Austin restaurant operates a dine-in counter service that is both takeaway and third-party delivery. The room itself will have indoor and terrace areas. The opening times are daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Mason’s founder and president Daniel Beck, who previously served as a seafood buyer, founded the restaurant in 2014 in Annapolis, Maryland. There are locations along the east coast as well as numerous extensions, including one in Colorado. The Austin franchise is run by Taher Dhilla.

The Second Bar’s original location was opened in downtown Austin in 2010 by Executive Chef David Bull, who is also the regional vice president of food and beverage for parent company La Corsha. The company decided last fall not to extend the restaurant’s lease due to an undesirable lease. Its Northside Domain and Austin Airport locations will remain open.

Across the street, the Southern California fish chain Ways & Means Oyster House was due to open its first location in Texas and take over the former Annie’s Cafe, as announced in May 2018. However, the plan has not progressed since then.

Austin-born and based Garbo’s food truck and restaurant, founded by Heidi Garbo in 2013, also focuses on serving lobster rolls in Maine from its roaming truck and physical location in North Shoal Creek.
