More than 1,000 turkeys given out in Austin despite high prices

Without the Hands for Hope meal distribution, Dasawne Cavanaugh would not have been able to afford her turkey this year.
AUSTIN, Texas – The ongoing supply chain crisis has seen the price of Thanksgiving dinner rise this year.
Despite the scarcity and rising prices, El Buen Samaritano met on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and handed out food packages so that everyone can celebrate this Thanksgiving with a good meal.
“You can have a full turkey and the traditional ingredients like potatoes, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, the vegetables that go with traditional meals,” said Dr. Rosamaria Murillo, CEO of El Buen Samaritano.
Dasawne Cavanaugh, who stopped by to collect her food package, said she couldn’t have bought this year’s turkey if it hadn’t been for the event.
“People are really hungry and they don’t get that kind of money and I have no money, you know,” she said. “So it’s very difficult to get full meals.”
Murillo said this year they had more appeal than previous years due to rising food prices and scarcity.
While some pantries are struggling to get their hands on large quantities of turkey, Murillo said they don’t.
“We are very happy to have had a partnership with HEB for a number of years that has enabled us not to face this challenge,” she added. “It was a blessing for us to be able to secure so many turkeys.”
With over 1,000 turkeys available, they were able to give something back to those most in need.
“We are there for the community and the community is there for us too,” said Murillo. “These are the people who build our community. These are the people who work in construction, who are cleaning our buildings, our homes, that have lost so much during this pandemic. And in order for us to have the honor of serving, “it’s an amazing feeling.”
