AUSTIN, TEXAS (KWTX) – Police in Austin said they are looking for a “Black man with a thin build and dreadlocks” after a shooting in the entertainment district in the 400 Block of East 6th Street that left several people wounded.

“I cannot say that there is no further public danger at this point because the suspect is not in custody. It appears at this point to be isolated,” said Interim Austin Police Chief Joseph Chacon.

No fatalities have been reported so far, but two patients are in critical condition, Chacon said. The police chief said at least 13 patients had received treatment or been transported to local hospitals.

“I am very grateful at this point that we do not have more people who are deceased. I do believe it was the actions of our officers who responded very quickly an have been trained in life saving measures, including use of first aid kits and tourniquets that they carry on their person, to be able to help people who were in serious distress,” said Chacon.

The police chief said there were very large crowds in downtown Austin and it was “very difficult to contain the scene and it was very difficult for EMS to make its way into the crowds.”

“Because of the nature of the injuries, officers had to use their police vehicles to put some of the vehicles and transport them themselves to the hospital,” Chacon said.

Investigators plan to review surveillance camera footage from businesses at the scene of the shooting. Police are also asking witnesses to share video or photos taken at the scene.

The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is aiding the investigation.
