The Austin Business Journal reports that both studios have signed separate short-term leases in the Austin area.

AUSTIN, Texas – According to a report in the Austin Business Journal (ABJ), both Netflix and HBO have signed short-term leases in the Austin area to allow them to shoot new projects.

Home Box Office Inc. (HBO) has reportedly rented 110,000 square feet in Kyle Crossing, which is located in Kohler’s Crossing, Kyle, in 1980, while Netflix Inc. (Netflix) has leased about 20,000 square feet in East Austin, sources told ABJ.

According to the report, HBO’s lease is for a year and Netflix’s contract is for 12-18 months. The ABJ reports that the leases coincide with productions that the Austin area studios have planned or have already started.

A source told ABJ that HBO will be filming a true crime series in Lockhart and will be using the Kyle Crossing room for costumes and storage. Netflix will also shoot in Austin and use its Alexander Avenue space for production in 2008, multiple sources told ABJ.

Further details about the productions were not released and none of the studios responded to ABJ’s request for comment. It is also unclear how many employees will be stationed at each location.

ABJ reports that HBO and Netflix have already worked in the Austin area. HBO filmed “The Leftovers” in Lockhart in 2016, and Netflix has directed or produced several titles in Austin, including the first season of the animated series “Castlevania” and the independent films “6 Years” and “Mr. Roosevelt”.
