New Fredericksburg hotel will pay homage to city’s history

One boutique hotel that is about to open in Fredericksburg has a historic name that matches its positioning on the floor plan of several historic buildings in the downtown area: Albert Hotel.

The name pays homage to Albert Keidel, the late architect and man who built an early Fredericksburg Hospital, which is now one of the most photographed buildings in Hill Country town.

When completed, the Albert Hotel at 242 Main Street will span two acres and integrate the new building into the Keidel family’s original pharmacy and homesteads. The developers, Austin’s New Waterloo, said it would open next summer.

Patrick Jeffers, New Waterloo’s chief development officer and partner, said his company worked with the Keidel family to restore the original late 19th century buildings.

“The historical significance, beauty and character of the existing buildings, along with their location in the golden blocks of the city, capture the soul of the Hill Country,” Jeffers said in a statement.

Slightly above the industry standard for boutique hotels, the 110-room Albert Hotel will feature bunk beds, suites, and a private home. The property will have three restaurants, two bars and a private dining room. The site will include a pool, fitness center, spa and 3,600 square meters of event space with a mezzanine and an event space. This also includes a multi-storey car park with 160 spaces.

Clayton Korte architects intend to use wood, limestone, stone and steel to create a design that is both differentiated and compatible with the original buildings.

Kiel’s footprint is all over Fredericksburg. He built the Keidel Memorial Hospital, now the Instagram-worthy Der Küchen Laden.

His father, Dr. Wilhelm Keidel, arrived in town about its founding in 1846 and was Gillespie County’s first doctor and first district judge according to the Texas State Historical Association. The Keidel family ran the pharmacy out of the future Hotel Albert.
