A new East German restaurant in Austin, Koko’s Bavarian, can boast a true Bavarian prince as a co-founder. Koko’s will open in November at 4715 East Fifth Street, the space vacated by the Brewer’s Table.

German dishes, smoked meat and German beers are served at Koko’s, including six home-brewed ones. The menu includes dishes such as sausages, french fries with dip, schnitzel, pretzels and more. The beer program will include 30 types of German and local beers (Koko’s will brew four lager and two ales, with beer cooperations planned).

The room is designed in the style of a beer garden with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating and an outdoor stage for live music. It is also adjacent to the Central Machine Works, another beer garden, and a brewery.

Coconut comes from Konstantin Prinz von Bayern, whose full name is Konstantin Eugen Alexander Max-Emanuel Maria Ludwig Ferdinand Leopold of Bavaria, although he is understandably nicknamed Koko. (Koko’s fifth great-grandfather, King Ludwig I, hosted the first Oktoberfest in 1810.) His other partners are Jesse Herman of New Waterloo, who owns Sway, La Condesa, and others; Charles Attal of C3 Presents events company; Tim Love of Dallas-based restaurant with a location in Austin Lonesome Dove; and investor Nick Swerdfeger.

“The goal of Kokos Bavarian is to stay true to the roots and culture of Bavaria while at the same time preserving the Austin spirit,” said Prince of Bavaria Eater via email. “I think the unpretentious beer garden experience suits Austin and the locals so well. And since the city has great weather all year round, the Austinites can fortunately enjoy the beer garden much longer than the three to four months of sunshine that we get in Germany. “

The Brewer’s Table opened in 2018 with the aim of pairing beers with high-end food and won several awards during its brief tenure. By the time it closed in 2020, most of the opening team – chef Zach Hunter and head brewer Drew Durish – had already left.

Koko’s is open from Tuesday to Thursday from 4 p.m. to midnight, Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to midnight and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
