Obituary for Michael A. Theurer

Michael A. Theurer, 74, of Marshfield, WI, died on September 1, 2021 at VA Medical Center in Tomah, WI, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease of Agent Orange side effects while serving in Vietnam.

Michael was born on February 28, 1947 in Marshfield, WI, to Rudy and Marie Theurer. He attended St. John the Baptist Catholic School and Columbus Catholic High School, which he graduated in 1965. From 1965 to 1966 he attended the University of Wisconsin, Marshfield Wood County Campus. He joined the US Army on September 1, 1967, and served in Vietnam as an infantryman and radio operator, and was honorably discharged on May 15, 1968. Mike was very proud to have served in the Army and his wish was to be in his military uniform with his earned medals.

After his military service he worked for his father as an upholsterer at AZ Upholstery. In 1977 he bought the business from his father and became the owner / operator of AZ Polster and Theurer Custom Furniture. Mike also taught an evening class in upholstery at Mid-State Technical College for many years.

Mike married former Bonnie Hupe on May 19, 1973 and they had a son, Corey Michael. They later divorced. He was a member of the Marshfield Elk’s Club and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 1866 of Marshfield. For many years he enjoyed attending Corey’s football games at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater, the University of Wisconsin Badger football games at Camp Randall Stadium, playing golf, and playing poker. He also enjoyed his 50+ year “annual” fishing weekend in the north with his best friends. After Mike entered VA Medical Center, the boys continued their annual Up North weekend in the Tomah / La Crosse area for Mike to attend.

Mike was honored to be selected as one of the first 10 men to move from the VA hospital to the VA Medical Center’s Green House Residential Care Home on the medical center’s premises.

Michael leaves behind his son Corey Michael Theurer of Austin, TX, his goddaughter / niece Amanda (Mark) Bennett of Beloit, WI, his brother David (Terry) Theurer, sisters; Kathryn (Mike) Koenig, Becky King and sister-in-law Kathy Theurer. Nieces; Vicki Crider, Robyn Gillie, Kristina Koenig, Shelby King and nephews; Dave Theurer, Keith Theurer, and Nick Koenig all from Tucson, AZ. His sister and brother-in-law; Bev and Ken Folz from Rozellville, WI, Connie and Bill Niemuth from Milton, WI and Audrey and Larry Syring from Stratford, WI, nephews and nieces; Todd (Connie) Folz, Amy (Judd) Hanson, Tammy Folz, Tim (Becky) Folz, April (Dane) Seubert, Steven Niemuth, Lance Syring and Lauralee (Lee) Kunze as well as numerous great nieces and nephews.

Mike also leaves behind lifelong best friend Bob (Mary Varney) Fischer, friends Tom (June) Varney, John Draxler, Dean Peterson, and Tom Heiting.

Michael was in the death of his parents Rudy and Marie (Eilers) Theurer, brother Charles Theurer, his in-laws Annita (Kraus-Hupe) and Dale Pokallus, Roland Hupe and his grandparents, John and Elizabeth “Ella” Theurer and Alois and Olive Eilers.

A Christian funeral mass will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church on Thursday, September 9, 2021 at 10:30 am, under the direction of Rev. Daniel Williams. The service will be broadcast live at www.facebook.com/rembsfuneralhomes. The tour will take place on Wednesday, September 8, 2021, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until the service in the church in the Rembs Funeral Home.

The funeral will take place at the Veterans Field of Honor at Hillside Cemetery in Marshfield, WI. Military honors are administered by the American Legion Post 54 and the Wisconsin State Military Honor Guard.

Corey would like to thank Mike’s doctors, nurses, and all of the caregivers at Tomah VA Medical Center for the professional care and friendship they showed Mike during his stay at the facility and Peg Gehrke, RN and friend, for visiting Mike’s house prior to his move to Tomah VA .
