Our Opinion: Help the United Way, help the community – Austin Daily Herald

The United Way of Mower County recently launched its 2021 Community Campaign, an effort that has its sights set on the target of $ 1,275,000, more than the nearly $ 1,100,000 the campaign raised last year.
However, as has been the case for years, the help of the community is needed to achieve its goal.
The challenges we are all facing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic have been formidable and have put us all under pressure. It changed the way we live and stole our paperbacks, but supporting the United Way of Mower County is helping Austin.
UWMC supports over 20 local nonprofits that are committed to serving the citizens of Mower County directly. Often times, that help comes in the form of life changing services when people need help most.
Raising over $ 1 million is never easy, but Austin and Mower Counties have populated themselves by donating to people and organizations that recognize what United Way does every day.
And this year, like last year, people will need help more than ever. In a press release last week, the UWMC added some worrying numbers.
According to the latest report from the Minnesota Department for Employment and Economic Development on the Socio-Economic Impact of COVID-19 in Minnesota, 24% of households have difficulty paying basic expenses, 9% of the time Families experience interruptions in childcare, 16% of people expect a loss of income from work, 6% of households suffer from food shortages and hunger, and 28% of households are likely to receive eviction notices within the next two months.
It is because of these numbers that the United Way is so important. If you have not already done so, we ask you to help this year to make sure those dollars, through the fine work of United Way, get to the people and organizations who need them.
