Pflugerville friends create their own tequila

After celebrities like Dwayne Johnson and Kendall Jenner launched their own tequila brand, three friends from Pflugerville were inspired to start their own brand.

“We’re all big Longhorn fans and sometime in 2013 we went to see a game and at that moment I was thinking of creating a kind of spirit,” said Angel Gallegos, 42, co-founder and managing partner of Dos Cuernos Tequila. “I didn’t know if it was going to be a moonlight or a whiskey, but I sipped a patron and turned to Peter thinking we should start our own tequila.”

Gallegos said the name for their tequila, Dos Cuernos, means “two horns” in Spanish and was inspired by her love for the University of Texas Longhorns.

Co-managing director and UT alum Sylvester Palacios Jr., 33, said he met Gallegos and Peter Trevino, 45, now the co-managing director of Dos Cuernos, over the weekends at El Rincon restaurant in Pflugerville.

“We didn’t want to tie it too much to UT-Austin because we didn’t want them to be after us, but for me Dos Cuernos was a natural response to calling it,” Gallegos said.

“My sister knew a friend who was the cousin of the owner of this restaurant and that’s when I met her because they were all somehow related to El Rincon in terms of family and so we all became close friends and now family with ours Business, “said Palacios.

In 2014, Gallegos, Palacios and Trevino registered Dos Cuernos as a limited company.

“After we started the process for an LLC, things started for us in 2016 when we started putting our logo together,” said Gallegos. “It was a long process as we all have families and full-time jobs, but it has allowed us to grow, understand what it took to get to that point, and embed ourselves in the brand.”

When they started their business, Palacios said marketing was a huge asset to them.

“In the past, people always asked us: ‘Why are you promoting your tequila when it’s not there?’ And we just said ‘art can’t rush’,” said Palacios. “All of the parts of the bottle – the labeling and the taste came together carefully and carefully because we wanted to get it right. When creating our merchandise, website and social media pages, our Facebook business page and Instagram were really key to our brand. Both introduced our milestones as companies as we got closer, such as when we had finished labeling or designing the bottle, and our followers grew with us when we posted these photos because we weren’t just building a demand and the brand but also you could see our business growing day by day or month by month. When the bottles arrived, everyone wanted to know where to get their own. “

Palacios said family and close friends continue to be her motivation because they haven’t forgotten their Mexican roots.

“They enjoy tequila as much as we do and were in our circle, which inspired us to build a tequila brand that we own but also to share with it,” said Palacios. “We wanted to give them a spirit that is there to celebrate their successes, victories and family celebrations, so that our tequila is right in the middle of it, where they enjoy it and these special moments. We continuously embody family, work ethic, and Mexican pride in everything we do. ”

Dos Cuervos bottles arrived in the Austin area in February 2020, just before the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

“It’s great to have something from the start and watch it grow,” said Palacios. “I didn’t want to believe that we started our own tequila brand until I saw the bottle on the shelf of a liquor store, but the process was really a love affair.”

When hosting events for the brand, the co-founders said it never really feels like they’re working.

“We enjoy everything and we wouldn’t do that if we didn’t like it,” said Gallegos. “Our bottle has all of our last names engraved on the top and it even says Pflugerville, Texas on the back because we’re all connected there and my aunt was the original owner of El Rincon, so the Pflugerville church is still deeply rooted.”

The Pflugerville tequila brand can be found in more than 30 locations in the region and the company plans to launch a reposado and an anejo.
