He also leaves two sisters, Janeth Ranum and Janet Nelson-Commers.

He was previously deceased by two sisters, Shirley Patterson and Gwen Jordan.

Ron will be remembered as a devoted Catholic, loyal husband, patient father, loving grandfather, good friend, generous philanthropist, and entrepreneurial dreamer.

Ron grew up on a dairy farm in Oakland Minnesota, where he and his four sisters attended the Lugg one-room schoolhouse from first through eighth grades. Ron later graduated from Pacelli Catholic School in Austin, MN, and continued working on the family farm before joining the U.S. Army in 1955. He was stationed at Fort Bliss, TX and honorably discharged in 1956. Ron then attended Mankato State College, graduating in 1961 with a degree in business administration.

Ron began his career with General Mills in 1961 as an internal auditor and married Jeanette in 1962. In 1967 he was named vice president and chief financial officer of Slim Jim, Inc., a division of General Mills. Slim Jim, Inc. was later renamed GoodMark Food and Ron moved to Raleigh in 1970 to serve as assistant controller. In 1982, Ron led a one-of-a-kind leveraged buyout from GoodMark Foods. He led the company through an IPO in 1985. In 1993 Forbes Magazine named GoodMark Foods # 11 in America’s Top 100 Small Businesses, and Ron was named Manufacturing Entrepreneur of the Year by Inc. Magazine. GoodMark was acquired by ConAgra Foods in 1998 and Ron remained Chairman and CEO until he retired in 1999. He was inducted into the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by the State of North Carolina in 1999 and the NC Business Hall of Fame in 2004. In 2014 he received the Greater Raleigh Chamber AE Finley Distinguished Service Award.

Ron has served on numerous corporate, academic, ecclesiastical, and nonprofit bodies with the intention of using his business knowledge and passion to help others to make a difference. In 1999, Ron was named Philanthropist of the Year by the NC Planned Giving Council, a tribute to the nonprofit groups he and Jeanette worked for such as the WakeMed Hospital and Foundation, the Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral in Raleigh, Mankato State University, the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, Human Habitat of Wake County, the North Carolina Museum of Art, and St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Raleigh.

Ron loved gardening, fishing, hunting, being a handyman, and refurbishing furniture. He was known for delivering bouquets of flowers to his neighbors, family, and friends with his backyard peonies, tulips, and hydrangeas. What he really appreciated most was spending time with his family, whether it be attending mass, watching the sunsets from his deck in Emerald Isle, or sharing a meal together. He often said that his greatest achievement in life was being remembered as a good husband, father, grandfather and friend.
