A popular tamale store based in San Antonio expands its business and brings a location to Austin.
Delicious Tamales, the mother and daughter-run company that started in 1980 with an initial investment of $ 500 in San Antonio, has grown to five locations across the San Antonio subway area and a nationwide shipping option.
Owner Valerie Gonzalez has her roots in Austin as many of her cousins and siblings were attending the University of Texas, according to the company’s website.
“We appreciate the loyalty of individuals, companies and several Austin nonprofits,” Gonzalez told Austin CultureMap in a press release. “Opening a location here will allow more people to enjoy old-fashioned tamales like the ones my Abuelita taught us.”
The Delicious Tamales in Austin – in the 1931 E. Oltorf St. Suite G – will be open Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
According to their website, Delicious Tamales is the leading manufacturer of tamales in San Antonio, selling more than 2.1 million each year. They were also named “Best Tamales” for 10 years in a row from 1996-2006 at the Reader’s Choice Awards, sponsored by San Antonio Express-News.
Delicious Tamales was also listed among the “Top 25 Hispanic-Owned Businesses” in San Antonio by the San Antonio Business Journal.
