Sex, style, gloss: Ford knows how to tease in his new book
[ad_1]
Texas’ most stylish export is back with a new status ribbon from Rizzoli that documents a very well lived life.
Sex, style, glamor. Tom Ford knows how to tease us.
He’s the native Texan (via Austin) who later ruled the catwalk, first as Gucci’s creative director, then as the smoldering father of his own eponymous fashion empire. He also courted Hollywood on the side. His meticulous 2009 film, A Single Man, earned Colin Firth an Oscar nomination, and Ford raved about it. Just a coincidence? Barely. This was followed in 2016 by the arty thriller Nocturnal Animals (“which switches back and forth between West Texas nightmare and Los Angeles steering,” described our former critic Chris Vognar) and steamed the screen with Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal.
But Ford in press – that was a completely different obsession. And it gets even hotter.
It started with Ford’s self-titled debut volume in 2004, which was originally issued in two editions – one covered in black fabric, the other in white leather. Dallas swells up to a book launch party in downtown Neiman Marcus, complete with bare-chested waiters with Ford signing copies. [His missive for KDFW-TV (Channel 4) news anchor Clarice Tinsley: “For Clarice (I’m drunk, Clarice) Tom Ford.”]
The book became such a ubiquitous status symbol among a crowd in Dallas that former The News style magazine, FD, once published an interior design series with photos showing copies in the living rooms of 10 different owners.
Now 17 years later, Ford, kind of 60 years old, is back with a second volume, “Tom Ford 002” (Rizzoli, $ 135), which hit the market last week. No surprise, it’s crazy: In a slipcase, 444 pages, foreword by Anna Wintour from Vogue, intro by former Vanity Fair taste maker Graydon Carter, conversation with fashion thinker Bridget Foley. And all just a generous foundation for the real allure, an orgy of Ford photos – for him, of him, even of him – showing his life after Gucci, the launch of his brand, and his adventures in Hollywood with some very handsome friends .
Free up space on your coffee table.
