Smithwick appointed as Area 5 Coordinator by TSO

Mellie Smithwick, member of the Beta Pi Chapter, Alice, was recently appointed as Area 5 Coordinator by TSO 2021-2023, President of the Biennium; Shalan Inmon, Member of the Kappa Lambda Chapter, Area 7, Slaton, Texas. Smithwick attended the Leadership Orientation for State Personnel in Arlington, Texas, in July, presented for comprehensive training by former TSO Presidents and State Personnel Committee members in consultation with President Inmon.

Smithwick is responsible for liaising with the TSO President, the Executive Committee, and the Area 5 chapters. She is expected to attend the TSO Convention in Lubbock in June 2022, McAllen in June 2023, and is encouraged to attend the International Convention in New Orleans in July 2022. Smithwick will lead the Area 5 chapters in Corpus Christi, Brownsville, Weslaco, Mission, Harlingen, Pharr, Raymondville, Laredo and Alice by attending at least two chapter meetings in person or through Zoom during the biennium. She is also responsible for coordinating the Area 5 Workshop August 2022, with the support of her home chapter Beta Pi as a steering committee.

Smithwick has been a member of the Beta Pi Chapter of the TSO Delta Kappa Gamma (DKG) Society International for 10 years. As a member, she served for eight years as Corresponding Secretary, Treasurer, Newsletter Editor, Webmaster, Chair of Advertising and Communications, Chapter Photographer, Chair of Ways & Means, Coordinator of Chapter O’What a Show’s sole fundraiser, and was awarded with The . awarded for Beta Pi Chapter Achievement Award. At the state level, she attended the TSO Leadership Seminar class in 2017; served on the TSO Women In the Arts Ad Hoc Committee, Area 5 Committee Member in Women In the Arts and TSO Technology Committee Member, each for two years. She has attended eight TSO conventions, two international conventions, one in Nashville, Tennessee, and Austin, and the most recent international conference in San Antonio.

Smithwick is a graduate of Alice High School; BS graduate from Texas Woman’s University, Denton, Business Administration; MS graduate from Texas A&M University, Kingsville, Guidance and Counseling and certified in Family, Consumer and Human Sciences. She retired in 2009 as a career counselor from Alice ISD, Alice High School, and returned to San Diego ISD in 2018 as the 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) -Texas Afterschool Centers on Education Program or Texas ACE, Site Coordinator. and continues to work as an enrichment teacher.

The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International was founded on May 11, 1929 in Austin, Texas by Dr. Annie Webb Blanton founded. The DKG promotes the professional and personal development of educators and excellence in education. The Beta Pi Chapter was founded on November 16, 1935 by Dr. Blanton is organizing and celebrating its 86th anniversary this November. Other educators from the Beta Pi Chapter who served as Area 5
