As a reminder, Tesla currently has three factories in the United States: Fremont, California (Tesla Factory, as they call it); Giga Factory in Sparks, Nevada (Tesla Giga Factory) and the Giga Factory in Buffalo, New York (Tesla Giga Factory 2).
The Tesla facility in Fremont, California is one of the most advanced automobile factories in the world, with 5.3 million square feet of manufacturing and office space on 370 acres of land. After the city of Fremont approves Tesla’s expansion plans in 2016, the company will nearly double the size of the facility to nearly 10 million square feet and create thousands of new jobs in the years to come.
The Gigafactory Nevada was born out of necessity and will provide enough batteries to meet Tesla’s forecast vehicle demand. Today, in addition to Tesla’s Powerwall and Powerpack energy storage products, the Gigafactory also produces Model 3 electric motors and battery packs. esla broke ground for the Gigafactory in June 2014 outside of Sparks, Nevada. The name Gigafactory is derived from the word “Giga”, the unit of measurement for “billions”. The Gigafactory will be built in phases so that Tesla can immediately start manufacturing the finished sections and then expand further.
The current structure already has a floor space of more than 1.9 million square feet, which houses approximately 5.3 million square feet of operating space over multiple floors. Nevertheless, the Gigafactory is about 30 percent ready. Tesla expects the Gigafactory to be the largest building in the world when completed – and run entirely on renewable energy sources. The facility, which will be designed as a net-zero energy factory after completion, will mainly run on solar energy and the installation is already in progress.
In 2017, Tesla began manufacturing solar cells and modules at Gigafactory 2 – a 1.2 million square foot facility in Buffalo, New York. In 2019, Tesla added new production lines that will support electrical components for superchargers and energy storage products. To date, Tesla has created almost 800 jobs in Gigafactory 2 and is continuing to ramp up operations and production in the facility. Originally a steel manufacturing facility, the 88 acre property on the Buffalo River has been converted to manufacture solar panels and solar cells. The factory’s original owner entered into an agreement with the Research Foundation for the State University of New York. Tesla secured Gigafactory 2 by acquiring SolarCity in 2016.
The Gigafactory Texas (also known as the Tesla Gigafactory 5 or Giga Texas) is the automotive manufacturing facility near Austin, Texas that Tesla has been under construction since July 2020. Tesla aims to have first production before the end of 2021 and mass production in. on 2022. The factory is to be the main factory for the Tesla Cybertruck and Tesla Semi. It will also manufacture Model 3 and Model Y for the eastern United States and be the location of the new Tesla headquarters. On July 22, 2020, during a conference call on Q2 2020 results, Tesla announced that Del Valle, Austin, Texas has been selected for the Gigafactory 5.
Construction began at the end of July 2020. Tesla Giga Texas received approximately $ 50 million in government tax incentives through the Texas Tax Code Chapter 313 program. The first fully completed Tesla Model Y ran off the production line at Giga Texas in the last week of August 2021.
Until September 2021, Automotive news compiled a list of Tesla suppliers who have announced plans to deploy new manufacturing capacity in Texas and some near the project:
Plastikon, an injection molded plastics maker in Hayward, Calif., who supplies Tesla’s Fremont assembly plant and supplies plastics to automotive customers and other industries. The Austin Business Journal reported that Plastikon has leased a 100,000-square-foot facility in nearby Kyle, Texas, which will manufacture components for Tesla.
Simwon North America, a US business unit of Myoung Shin Industrial from South Korea, will open a body parts plant in Kyle. Simwon also supplies Tesla’s assembly plants in Fremont. According to its website, the company and affiliated subsidiaries supply Hyundai, Hyundai Steel and the supplier Hyundai Mobis and Tesla in China.
ElringKlinger, a German supplier of parts and engineering services for electric vehicle programs, will build a $ 17 million plant in San Antonio, according to a local construction company. ElringKlinger is currently supplying cockpit cross members for the Tesla Model 3 production in Fremont.
Saueressig engineering, a German industrial process provider now owned by US corporation Matthews International Corp. is from Pittsburgh, will be building a plant in San Antonio, according to a local report. Saueressig Engineering is a Tesla supplier and the new Texas facility is expected to focus on EV battery production.
