Tesla Gigafactory Texas attracts suppliers as production nears

A new report shows that several well-known Tesla suppliers are exhibiting in Texas while the automaker is about to start production at its gigafactory in Austin.

Tesla Gigafactory Texas is an important project for the automaker.

It is the first vehicle factory Tesla is building from the ground up in the United States.

The automaker currently operates a factory in Fremont, California, but was built by General Motors in 1962 and acquired by Tesla in 2010.

Converting it for electric vehicle production required a lot of work, and Tesla concluded that in the future it would be better to build a factory from scratch.

That’s what it did at the Gigafactory Nevada for batteries, electric motors, energy products, and housing Panasonic’s battery cell production facility.

Tesla also built the Gigafactory Shanghai from scratch for electric vehicles.

In any case, these projects are so big that they have attracted a lot of suppliers.

After Tesla produced up to 500,000 vehicles in Fremont, the Bay Area became a hub for automotive suppliers.

Gigafactory Texas is expected to be an even bigger project with several high volume vehicle programs being produced at the factory including Model Y, Cybertruck, Tesla Semi and more.

This is now reportedly attracting several well-known Tesla suppliers.

Automotive News has compiled a list of well-known Tesla suppliers that recently announced plans to build new manufacturing facilities in Texas and some near the project:

  • Plastikon, an injection molded plastics maker in Hayward, California, supplies Tesla’s Fremont assembly plant and supplies plastics to automotive customers and other industries. The Austin Business Journal reported that Plastikon has leased a 100,000-square-foot facility in nearby Kyle, Texas, which will manufacture components for Tesla.
  • Simwon North America, a US business unit of Myoung Shin Industrial of South Korea, will open a body parts plant in Kyle. Simwon also supplies Tesla’s assembly plants in Fremont. According to its website, the company and affiliated subsidiaries supply Hyundai, Hyundai Steel and the supplier Hyundai Mobis and Tesla in China.
  • ElringKlinger, a German supplier of parts and engineering services for electric vehicle programs, will build a $ 17 million plant in San Antonio, according to a local construction company. ElringKlinger is currently supplying cockpit cross members for the Tesla Model 3 production in Fremont.
  • Saueressig Engineering, a German provider of industrial processes that is now part of the US conglomerate Matthews International Corp. owned by Pittsburgh, will be building a plant in San Antonio, according to a local report. Saueressig Engineering is a Tesla supplier and the new Texas facility is expected to focus on EV battery production.

As we previously reported, Steel Dynamics, rumored to have secured the contract to supply the steel for the Tesla Cybertruck exoskeleton, is also in the process of completing a huge new steel mill in Texas.

Tesla recently announced that it would start production at Gigafactory Texas by the end of the year – starting with the Model Y.
