AUSTIN, Texas – Several organizations and business owners come together to raise funds and resources for those affected by Hurricane Ida in Louisiana. The violent Category 4 storm wreaked havoc in large areas of the state, including power outages for the entire Parish of Orleans. The devastation has left an urgent need for supplies for those who have remained in these areas.
Sister Christina Muhammad heads 10,000 Fearless First Responders. The group raises money to, among other things, finance hotel stays for evacuees as well as non-perishable food, toiletries and clothing.
The group plans to set up a passageway in Givens Park on the east side of the city where people can make donations for Ida’s evacuees. The event is scheduled for noon on August 30th and volunteers will be accepting donations until the evening.
“Now they are, and we can be today or tomorrow, so I want to be able to say, ‘Look, I know Austin was always a good, friendly neighbor. And I know Austin will help us unconditionally, ‘”said Muhammad.
A few blocks away, Chef Luis Robledo of Cuantos Tacos 512 and Anthony Pratto of Discada Taqueria are also running similar fundraising drives.
“Everything you need like toiletries and everything for hygiene for women, for babies, children and things that are really good at traveling,” said Robledo.
For Pratto, his mission of organizing the fundraiser had a personal component.
“It’s really important for me to give back, especially when I’ve got so much love from Discada and also from the last freeze,” he said. He is referring to the Louisiana-based nonprofit TankProof, whose volunteers made the trip to Austin amid the February snow storm and helped those without food or electricity to feed.
“As best we can help them as they did for us. This is very important to us, ”said Pratto.
On-site teams in the most severely affected areas of Louisiana assess the damage and pass on the specific needs of those affected to the organizers in Austin. Both Robledo and Pratto say they will depart Wednesday morning with the supplies gathered in tow.
