Barbecue, music, beer, and community all came together in Tyler for the Texas Monthly BBQ Fest on Sunday. That year, the magazine’s annual barbecue event took place outside of Austin and made its first of three nationwide stops at Stanley’s Famous Pit Bar-BQ.

In addition to Stanley’s Famous Pit Bar-BQ, there was another new restaurant in East Texas: Longview’s new Sunbird BBQ.

“East Texas is the original Texas barbecue. People settled in east Texas before settling anywhere else and they brought barbecue, ”said Daniel Vaughn, barbecue editor for Texas Monthly.

While at Texas Monthly for the past eight years, Vaughn said he saw grilling get better and better in east Texas and thinks the BBQ is “naughty.”

“It’s still all about that sassy grill, whether it’s a sweet glazed rib or a really great barbecue sauce on a chopped beef sandwich,” said Vaughn. “There’s a lot more fried catfish here too. I love the grill and peat platter where you get smoked meat and fried catfish on the same platter. “

The festival usually takes place in Austin, but Vaughn said the Texas Monthly team plans to take it to small towns this year and celebrate the release’s famous 2017 rankings one last time.

With the completion of the Tyler, Lubbock, and Brownsville road trip, the 2021 BBQ list will be released on October 18th.

The Texas Monthly Top 50 BBQ Ranking appears every four years and is a process by which the team searches for the best BBQ companies in Texas. Vaughn calls it the “Texas Barbecue Olympics”.

“As always, the new list has a lot of sales. It’s about good grilling, but also consistency, especially when it comes to our top 10 ranking. These places just consistently have good barbecues, ”said Vaughn. “It’s not just about the big cities, there’s great barbecues everywhere.”

Nick Pencis, co-owner of Stanley’s Famous BBQ, said he was honored that the company could be one of the places on the road trip.

“We are very grateful and honored that you have chosen Stanley’s as one of the locations to host the East Texas barbecue,” said Pencis. “It’s really cool that 62 years after Stanley’s was founded we’re still here and strong.”

Bryan Bingham and David Segovia, co-owners of Sunbird BBQ, were delighted to introduce their local business, especially since they have been in business for about six months.

“Sunbird BBQ is our passion, it’s our love. Myself and David (co-owner) really put everything we have into this place and it’s a combination of our background and our love of barbecuing, ”said Bingham.

Sunbird BBQ presented its Al Pastor Tacos with a side of corn. Bingham also wanted to pay tribute to his team, which also came to help.

The other grill companies that attended were Holy Smoke BBQ from Hunstville and Joseph’s Riverport BBQ in Jefferson.

The BBQ Fest tour continues this week on October 13th in Lubbock and October 17th in Brownsville. Tickets can be purchased at texasmonthly.com.
