On Sunday morning there was a procession in honor of Austin Police Officer Lewis “Andy” Traylor, who died last week in Austin, Texas, in an 18-wheeler accident.
Traylor died on Saturday night, just days after the July 28 crash that left him in critical condition, police said. He was on duty responding to a separate accident when the incident occurred.
Austin’s KVUE-TV reported that the procession started at around 9 a.m. from Dell Seton Medical Center and police from all over the area were escorting Traylor’s body to the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office.

“He had a heart for the service and risked his life for this community and ultimately made the ultimate sacrifice,” Austin interim police chief Joseph Chacon said after the procession. “We honor him today. And we will honor him tomorrow and we will honor him always.”
Police said Traylor responded to an accident with serious injuries when a semi-trailer made a U-turn in front of his vehicle. The vehicles collided and caught Traylor under the truck. He was hospitalized and fought for his life for three days.

Traylor was a nine-year police veteran. He also served in the Navy for 10 years, leaving behind a wife and five children, police said.
Ken Casaday, president of the Austin Police Association, told FOX 7 of Austin that Traylor worked hard to protect his community and support his family.
“Andy worked five or six days a week to make sure the bills were paid and the kids got the education they needed,” Casaday said. “That just shows you what kind of man he was. He worked hard every day to keep this community safe. “

Traylor is the 24th Austin police officer to die on duty, police said. In 2018 the department wrote that he loved being an officer because “new things happen every day”.
Chacon noted that even in death, Traylor “donated his organs to many others in need”.

“Even in making the ultimate sacrifice, Andy was determined to help others in their need and his heroism will live on,” Chacon wrote on Twitter.
Austin’s KEYE-TV reported that the officer was 37 years old.
