AUSTIN (KXAN) – An Austin school celebrated Mexican-American history and culture with the unveiling of a monarch mural on Monday morning.
The Linder Elementary School partnered with artists from Arte Texas to create a mural that overlooks the Linder Monarch Butterfly Garden.
The mural shows the migration of the monarch butterflies. Texas is one of the key states that butterflies travel through each year, and the butterflies are important to Mexican and Mexican-American cultures.
Monarch butterflies arrive in South Texas and cross to Mexico for the Día de los Muertos earlier than expected
The unveiling takes place on the Día de Los Muertos, a holiday in honor of the deceased. The indigenous Purépecha believe that the monarchs represent the souls of their ancestors who visit them for the Día de Muertos.

Second grade bilingual teacher Noe Elias also explained that the mural serves as both a reminder and a welcome.
“We have a large immigrant population, not all of them are Mexican immigrants, but the monarch butterfly represents the journey of the immigrants who come to one place,” said Elias. “… If we paint this mural, tell this story, it is very important for us, because it also welcomes a new generation.”
Linder Elementary is located in southeast Austin near Mabel Davis District Park.
