Thanksgiving community dinners are slowly coming back in Austin

Principe de Paz Church in Austin hosted a hybrid event Thursday where people could either pick up a plate or stay and enjoy the meal with others.
AUSTIN, Texas – It’s Thanksgiving!
Turkeys are in the oven and potatoes are smashed.
Eating good food is the main event of this holiday and the reason to meet at the Iglesia Bautista Principe de Paz.
Principe de Paz secretary Isabela Garcia said they celebrate by giving back to the community.
“This person came and said they had trouble paying their bills at home,” said Garcia. “She had no food. You turned off her gasoline.
On Thursday they helped hundreds of people like this person.
The event has been going on for years but had a lot of restrictions in 2020. However, as Central Texas adapts to COVID-19, the Church is also adapting.
“This year we made it more of a hybrid event where we still mostly have to go,” said Nestor Menjivar, pastor of Principe de Paz. “But we set up some tables for it. There are people who have no place to have their Thanksgiving meal. “
They wanted to make sure that everyone could feel the love, because there is nothing better than being in community.
“A lot of people come from other countries that don’t celebrate Thanksgiving,” said Garcia. “When this person comes to the US, it is important for us to show them that they have a place.”
“Although this is a blessed country and we have a lot, there are still many who are in need,” said Menjivar. “We all have to do a little to help others.”
