Traveling nurses find lucrative, high-demand gigs in Colorado and beyond

DENVER (KDVR) – A simple Google search for “Traveling Nurse Jobs – Denver” highlights the need for nurses and other staff in Colorado hospitals and outpatient facilities.

Nurses who travel for work say the job is lucrative.

“I nearly doubled the amount I made in Ohio, largely due to a double direct raise once I signed up for travel nursing,” said Austin Jeffers, an Arizona travel nurse.

The workforce is shifting, but where are the workers going?

Jeffers said he has just received his license to operate in Colorado and plans to get a job as a traveling nurse on the subway or in the Denver mountain areas soon. His first job as a travel nurse was in Lubbock, Texas, and has now worked a couple of times in Phoenix.

“I hope it’s my second year with Colorado, maybe I can settle into a job as a nurse,” said Jeffers.

But he said that since he has nowhere to go anywhere at the moment, being a traveling nurse is a great job, and he said more full-time nurses are seeing the benefits in the temporary jobs.

“There’s an influx of nurses turning into travelers, which also creates such a need, so it’s a circle of hospitals that are putting money into travel nurses instead of paying their nurses,” Jeffers said.

Most traveling nurse jobs last a maximum of three months and can take people to work across the country, if not the world.

Jeffers said there were some falls, however. He has to pay more for health insurance and doesn’t get a promised 401,000 from work.

“I think hospitals need to motivate nurses to stay. You don’t want a hospital full of travel nurses, ”Jeffers said.

Dan Weaver with UCHealth responded to the increasing demand:

“Travel nurses are certainly needed now. UCHealth hospitals treat about 20% more patients than usual, which means that we have about 20% more clinical shifts to occupy. Travel nurses help fill this gap, along with our employed nurses and other staff who take on extra shifts. However – travel nurses are also expensive for hospitals. Due to the demand, travel nurses and their organizations can get very high hourly rates. “
