PASO ROBLES – The Paso Robles Senior Center reopened July 1st after it closed due to the pandemic.

William (Bill) Pluma received the Carol Conway Award.
Get through it together, Paso Robles
The Carol Conway Award is given to a person who does volunteer work at all levels.
Pluma sees itself as a professional volunteer and advocate for the community. For Pluma, “volunteering opens the door to learning, camaraderie and community service.” Bill has been a volunteer for over 20 years. In 2007, Pluma received a Presidential Award from President Bush. President Bush recognized him for over 4,000 hours of volunteering over two consecutive years. He was instrumental in setting up the Food Bank Program. As part of the Food Bank, Pluma started the Grocery Food Barrel Program. He has also served on the board of directors of the Greater Paso Robles Toy Bank for over 24 years, served as president for 17 years, and chaired the fundraising committee for the past seven years. But that’s not all.
As a member of the Optimist Club, Pluma works with local high school students who are part of the Junior Optimist Club. Pluma also launched the Main Street Spelling Bee, which takes place in the park downtown.
Pluma encourages all seniors to volunteer. He says, “Seniors have the benefit of the time and life experience that make them perfect candidates for volunteering.”
Alexis Okumura, Director of Senior Volunteer Services, says, “Everyone who knows Bill Pluma knows that he puts all his heart and soul into every project he takes on … inspiring others to do the same.”
Steve Austin received the Director’s Award. This award is given to the person who supports the Senior Volunteer Services program.
Austin has served as treasurer on the board of the Senior Volunteer Services Program for the past seven years.
Alexis Okumura said: “Steve is an absolute gentleman who quietly makes his essential expertise available to SVS.”
In addition to Alexis Okumura, Steve Martin, Mayor of Paso Robles, Greg Carpenter, Interim City Manager, a representative from John Peschong’s office, Councilor Fred Strong and many others were present.
Both winners would like to encourage everyone who can to volunteer in their community.
Many of these organizations rely on their volunteers to keep their doors open.
Micki Wright, Paso Robles Senior Center coordinator, said, “Our volunteers make it possible to provide services and activities to our elderly population.”
