UTEP, UT Austin partner with U.S. Space Force | Local News

The University of Texas at El Paso will provide advanced research and human resource development for the newest branch of the US armed forces: the US Space Force.
The partnership, which includes the University of Texas at Austin, was formalized at a signing ceremony Thursday in El Paso at which General David Thompson, the Space Force’s deputy head of space operations, UTEP President Heather Wilson and UT Austin President Jay Hartzell attended.
“At the heart of the Space Force University Partnership Program is the need to advance our science and technology to build the next generation of space capabilities, coupled with the need to develop the workforce of the future,” Thompson said in a press release. “With a long history of leading aerospace research in the Paso del Norte region and beyond, we are confident we can find talent like this here at UTEP, at UT Austin, and across the UT system.”
UTEP and UT Austin are two of 11 universities selected for the Space Force University Partnership Program this year.
The main objectives of the program are to create research opportunities and advanced degrees for Guardians, as the Space Force personnel are called; Creation of scholarship, internship and mentoring opportunities for university students and ROTC cadets; and create job offers.
The US Space Force was established on December 20, 2019 as the sixth military branch. It is the first new service since the US Air Force was founded in 1947.
