VSP: Texas woman dead following crash in Washington Co. after tractor-trailer driver fell asleep | WJHL

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Virginia (WJHL) – A woman from Austin, Texas died of an accident involving a tractor-trailer in Washington County, Virginia.
According to a statement from the Virginia State Police, the crash occurred on Interstate 81 North at 3:24 a.m. on Thursday, October 21. VSP reports that a semi-trailer truck stopped on the right shoulder of the highway near the 10.3 mile mark.

VSP reports that the trailer truck driver, identified as Dale Allen, 64, of Covington, Kentucky, “fell asleep behind the wheel” after stopping the vehicle on the hard shoulder.
The clearance states that the semi-trailer was slowly driving north again in the lanes until it turned off the left side of the motorway and hit a guardrail.

“The tractor unit came to a halt on both lanes heading north,” the message says.
VSP reports that a 2015 Mini Cooper was traveling north in the right lane when it hit the trailer end of the articulated truck. The Mini Cooper driver was identified as Jeffie N. Barbee, 76, of Austin, Texas.

Barbee was transported to the Bristol Regional Medical Center. According to VSP, Barbee succumbed to her injuries at the medical center on Friday October 22nd. She was buckled up at the time of the crash.
None of them were injured in the crash. He has been charged with reckless driving, VSP reports.
The crash will be investigated from Tuesday.
