AUSTIN, Texas – Only certain types of boats are allowed to operate on Lady Bird Lake, where a boat almost passed over Longhorn Dam on Thursday. KVUE has confirmed that Retro Boat Rentals has rented the boat involved in the incident.
According to the Austin city website, electric boats with less than five horsepower are allowed on the lake. Gas powered boats are not allowed. For comparison: According to Balls Out Motors, an average electric golf cart would run on a motor of around five horsepower.
Retro Boat Rentals rented the boat to the women on Thursday. All of the company’s rental boats are electric and “adhere to wake and speed protocols,” according to the website. The lake is a no-wake zone, so Retro’s boats go at only 6 km / h.
The rules for city boats also apply on Lake Austin and Lake Walter E. Long.
