AUSTIN (KXAN) – Clear the Shelters is well on its way in central Texas and across the country.

While you and your family help animal shelters in hopes of achieving their goal, we guide you through the process of adoption or care from the local Austin Pets Alive!

The adoption process

The heart of the local animal shelter Austin Pets Alive!

“During COVID when we closed, everything was virtual, remote, and timed, and we found that we did a lot better at customer service,” said Sarah Aguilar, senior director of liferett operations for the Austin shelter.

So the puzzle has been how staff and volunteers can achieve an efficient adoption process without the long waits like before the pandemic, while maintaining the high levels of customer service and accommodation they achieved during the pandemic.

Once an adopter has a pet in mind or wants more information, they can email the appropriate contact to see what they want to do.

Resources during the adoption and foster care process

“You can discuss all of the pet’s quirks and personalities, their needs and history, and make sure the pet you are taking home is the best fit for your home,” said Aguilar. “The activity level, your energy level, what you’re looking for, whether or not you want to potty a puppy,” she laughed.

The difference beyond the Austin community

Austin Pets Alive! While already an important part of the shelter community in central Texas, it also provides resources and a home for pets from shelters across the country.

Most recently, the shelter took in over 30 cats from Texas shelters before Hurricane Ida hit the Louisiana coast. Four years ago, they also helped shelters on the trail of Hurricane Harvey.

Welfare work is tough physically, it’s tough emotionally, and at the end of the day, when you can say, ‘I’ve saved a life, I’ve changed a pet or a dozen, or in our case 1,000 pets,’ it offers something and fulfills life in ways few things do.

Many of the pets they take into their care come from animal shelters that do not have the resources to look after such animals in their conditions.

“Being a resource throughout the area not just for pet owners and prospective adoptive parents and carers in our community, but also for pets outside of Austin, means so much and is one of the things we can do as a private nonprofit. “Said Aguilar.

“Through adopters, carers, donors, people who just network and talk about our work, volunteers, everyone, if we didn’t have the support of the Austin community, we could do almost none of the work we do.”

Austin Pets Alive! has about 50 puppies to be found either through adoption or foster care, 120 cats and 200 other dogs on site at their Town Lake Animal Center who live in kennels. To date, the animal shelter has around 1,000 pets in its care.

Join KXAN through September 18 as we partner with animal shelters in the Central Texas area for Clear the Shelters, an annual adoption and donation initiative to get pets out of shelters and into permanent homes.
