On Giving Tuesday, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation Commits $38 Million toward Addressing Homelessness in Austin, Announces Community Match

Austin, Texas, November 30, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Today the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation announced a commitment from $ 38 million to fight homelessness in Austinbased on the foundation’s longstanding commitment in Central Texas. From the obligation $ 36.6 million awarded Multiplying Goodness, a capital campaign for Mobile Loaves & Fishes’ Community First! Village development that will fund an additional 1,400 homes for Central Texas people suffering from chronic homelessness. The foundation invites the community to double the funds to help Mobile Loaves & Fishes bring its $ 150 million Target.
Additionally, $ 1 million Matching Funds go to Foundation Communities for the construction of 100 units on the Burleson Real estate at Community First! Village and $ 400,000 will go to LifeWorks to provide permanent housing for young people who have become homeless, in line with the residential goals of Mobile Loaves & Fishes and Foundation Communities.

Since 2015 Community First! Village has become a nationally recognized model for tackling chronic homelessness. A development by Mobile Loaves & Fishes, Community First! Village offers affordable permanent housing, solid support services and a strong community where people can begin to settle down, heal and change their lives.

Of the around 3,000 homeless in Austin.51 percent are chronically homeless, compared to the national average for chronic homelessness of 25 percent. This grant is a one-time commitment to fund the expansion of Community First! Village to meet this urgent need.
There are a number of systemic factors that can threaten residential stability and continuous, sustained efforts are required to help individuals find and stay the way to a stronger and more prosperous future. Mobile Loaves & Fishes has found that $ 150 million is required for the next expansion from Community First! Village. This budget includes $ 50 million to build all supporting infrastructure and $ 100 million to build around 1,400 additional apartments and the necessary buildings for a holistic supply. Building the next phases of Community First! Village is set to begin in 2022 and expand on an already proven model that has been shown to have a life-changing impact on the lives of the homeless in Central Texas.
