Need still great as group holds 132nd pop-up food pantry

Vehicles meandered through the Ubly Fox Hunters Club parking lot Wednesday morning as volunteers loaded truck beds and trunks full of groceries during the latest pop-up food panty in Huron County.
Dozens of cars and trucks rolled through a well-organized assembly line for boxes of milk, eggs, fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen chicken quarters, and cereal. On Wednesday, the pallets of food delivered by the Food Book of Eastern Michigan were empty within 90 minutes.
Since the pandemic began, a group of dedicated service organizations and members of social clubs and those who just want to help have gathered to distribute food in Huron counties and northern Tuscola. The Wednesday event was the 132nd since March 2020.
Kurt Damrow of the Elkton Lions Club hosted the event on Wednesday, Tuesday in Port Austin and Thursday in Akron. He estimates his group has distributed more than 2 million pounds of groceries to families in Huron County in the past 16 months. About £ 22,000 passed out on Wednesday.
If someone needs food but is unable to attend an event, a friend or neighbor is happy to pick up some groceries for them. Damrow said vehicles can take food for up to four families, and those who wish can notify one of the volunteers who will direct traffic and their vehicle will be tagged to indicate how much food volunteers should load in their trunk. About 135 vehicles drove through the distribution line on Wednesday, 265 families were served.
“That was a really good turnout,” he said.
Kevin Grifka, president of the Ubly Fox Hunters Club, said his organization has housed about a dozen drive-through food supplies since the pandemic began. He said Damrow contacted him last year while looking for a place to have food distribution in the Ubly area and the club offered to host as the club was already organizing and hosting other charitable events. About 20 club members volunteered during the event on Wednesday.
“It was a great thing for the community,” said Grifka.
The next pop-up pantry is scheduled for Wednesday, July 21st at 2 p.m. at the Bay Port Chamber of Commerce, 9811 Main St., in Bay Port. The food competition is free and open to everyone.
