SHERMAN, Texas (KXII) – Freshmen at Austin College spent their first day on campus but not in the classroom. Instead, the students came together to give something back.
“It’s my favorite thing to do, I think it’s really fulfilling,” said Isbah Plumber, senior at Austin College.
On Monday, hundreds of freshmen at Austin College set to work packing meals for shipping overseas. It is a partnership with Kids Against Hunger, in which students pack rice meals for families in need.
“It’s exciting, I like to see everyone come together to do community work. I mean, that’s my entire freshman class put together, class of 2025, ”said Grayson first year student.
For many newbies, this is their first time giving back. Hence the name “First we serve”.
“I feel like when teams or a group of people get together and do things together, it really brings the community together because they see things come together,” said Brautigam.
“Take part on campus. Find new things that you love. Find your people, ”said Plumber.
This year, students in Honduras packed over 45,000 meals for families in need – more than ever before.
It’s something that Isbah Plumber, co-organizer of Austin College Service Station, thinks it’s important, now more than ever.
“It was an opportunity for us to see where we can make changes and be more efficient,” said Plumber.
With the COVID-19 pandemic, the campus would like to ensure the safety of all students while they continue to participate in events: through mandatory masking in doors, tests of all students and employees for the coronavirus and urgent requests for vaccinations.
“It’s just kept changing, so it’s really cool that we rolled out new projects last year that we hope we’ll be rolling out this year, even though things seem to be back to normal,” said Klempner.
Austin College has over 300 new students and 915 are returning to campus this fall semester.
