Austin flyover bridge connecting I-35 to U.S. 183 reopens after months

An overpass bridge between Interstate 35 and US 183 has been reopened for reconstruction work after being closed for four months.

The bridge that overlooks the interstate and leads north from I-35 to US 183 was torn down by implosions as part of a major project for the Texas Department of Transportation.

Construction began on the $ 127 million project in January 2018 and is modernizing a 2.7-mile stretch of I-35 from Rundberg Lane to US 290. In addition to rebuilding the overpass, three new US 183 overpasses are currently being built and I-35.

The project kept this flyover closed for about four months before reopening last week. The traffic is now flowing again on the overpass.

TxDOT officials said the overpass rose too much before rebuilding, causing the trucks to slow down and backups to be made. It was also rebuilt to make way for a driveway to I-35.

Two of the three flyovers are ready and open for travel. The last overpass from US 183 north to I-35 north is under construction and is expected to be completed in two months, weather permitting, said TxDOT spokeswoman Diann Hodges.

Contractors will also reconstruct the St. Johns Avenue Bridge over I-35 and add turning lanes on the front streets in both directions on St. Johns Avenue.

According to TxDOT, the construction should be completed in early 2022.
