Boutique grocery, Austin ice cream, and dentist join Houston mixed-use

The massive mixed-use development of Fifth Ward is taking shape with the announcement of three high profile tenants. Midway announced it had been added Broham Fine Soul Food & Groceries, Lick honest ice cream, and URBN Dental to East River, his huge project currently under construction along Buffalo Bayou near the intersection of Jensen Drive and Clinton Drive.
All three companies are scheduled to open in 2023 and will be in the first phase of the project, which will cover 26 of the 150 hectares of the development area. You will join a 360 unit residential home, office space, and shopping district with 13,000 square feet of green space.
Broham Fine Soul Food & Groceries is a food and market concept from head chef Jonny Rhodes. The new Broham was launched last year along with its Indigo restaurant and offers an even wider selection of prepared and cured products, freshly baked bread and pastries, locally sourced meat, seafood and produce, and more.
Broham builds on the mission Rhodes embarked on at Indigo, the neo-soul food restaurant, where it received a nomination for James Beard in the semifinals and national recognition from publications such as Texas Monthly, Eater, GQ and Food & Wine . Time magazine named it as one of only seven American restaurants in its list of the world’s best places for 2019.
Ultimately, the chef shut down Indigo earlier this year to focus on growing Broham and Food Fight Farms, his farm in Cleveland, Texas. With a permanent setup, the concept can expand its inventory and reward frequent buyers with perks like discounts, farm tours, and access to special ingredients.
As for Lick, East River is the first Houston location announced for the Austin-based ice cream parlor (a representative was reluctant to comment on whether the company has any plans for others). Known for making seasonal flavors with ingredients from Texas farms, all of Lick’s ice creams are soy-free, palm-oil-free, and preservative-free. CultureMap San Antonio described the approach of the Scoop Shop as follows:
Although Lick is known for using unconventional ingredients like cilantro and beets, Lick has plenty of accessible flavors for the whole family like milk chocolate, honey and vanilla pod, and horchata. But the seasonal menus are where Lick really lets his creative muscles stretch with innovative balls like honey-sweet peaches with rosemary; Dewberry Corn Cobbler; and spicy blackberries, lime and basil.
After all, URBN Dental describes itself as “Houston’s first BPA-free, BisGMA-free, environmentally friendly and environmentally conscious dental practice.” Patients turn to them for preventive treatments, emergency procedures, and cosmetic treatments such as tooth straightening and teeth whitening. The office uses digital technology that is less invasive and inconvenient than traditional practices.
Conveniences like free Wi-Fi and free snacks make the visit less stressful. East River will join URBN Dental’s existing locations in River Oaks and Midtown; it also plans to open offices in Montrose and The Heights next year.
Midway had previously announced that East River will host a nine-hole golf course and restaurant, due to open in 2022.
