Owned by Chef Darnell Reed, who is from Southside Chicago, Luella’s Southern Kitchen opened in 2015 and includes a number of A + of my favorites. I love their shrimp and grits. The homemade grains have the artisanal texture with a rich creaminess. No everyday breakfast, brunch or dinner, but a pleasure!
In Scottsdale, Arizona – my best friend keeps me fed up when I visit! – I love lo-los chicken and waffles. Don’t let the name fool you, the menu has tons of soul food favorites. My top choices are chicken and waffles – dark chicken and fluffy waffles with maple syrup. They have fabulous service and staff letting you know if you need to choose vegetarian or fried chicken, they will work with you.
At Sugar Jam I always order the catfish po’boy. When I see fried catfish on the menu, that pretty much sums up my choice. The crispy golden coating opens up into a perfectly cooked, flavorful fish. It is served in a French roll layered with tomato, romaine lettuce, and chipotle tartar tartar sauce. The apple salad is thumbs up too! They also have a Shrimp Po’boy who is just as good!

Christina: There’s a reason soul food stays here. It’s the all-in-one that can be found all over the world. For some it’s ramen or spaghetti, but for me it’s fried chicken. Some of the best fried chicken I’ve ever had came from places like Uncle Lou’s Southern Kitchen and Chef Tams Underground Cafe. The best part is that soul food doesn’t have to stop, we can add macaroni and cheese with a side of greens and it will take you to the heavenly place called Food Coma. It can also be rethought. It’s fun again in places like Trap Fusion! Soul Food was there for me with sadness, joy, love and happiness. It really is the best, and Memphis has the best.
Lisa: Soul food is my absolute favorite! Growing up in Memphis, I have always called soul food the best African American cuisine. It was the 10 course Sunday lunch with my family, the food truck on the corner smoking the best pulled pork and ribs you have ever tasted, and my uncle’s top notch fried fish and spaghetti.
We have an endless supply of world class soul food in Memphis so it’s hard to narrow down. Chef Tam’s Underground Cafe is one of my favorites. First, you need to understand that Chef Tam cooks all day. She’s probably cooking right now. Your recipes are awesome. She takes classic, timeless soul food recipes and turns them around. She is brave and brave in the kitchen. And I appreciate that. Their fried catfish, mac-n-cheese, veggies, and fried chicken are well worth the wait.
The Four Way Soul Food Restaurant is another favorite. An integral part of the community, they have been in South Memphis on Mississippi Boulevard at the corner of Walker Avenue for over 70 years, serving some of the best meals and dishes with love and laughter. It’s a Memphis gem. When I’m there, I order turkey and dressing, green beans, fried catfish, macaroni and cheese, and a cornbread muffin. Don’t judge me LOL!
Another place I like is Evelyn & Olive. They are not what we would call traditional soul food in Memphis as it serves Jamaican and Southern cuisine. The spices, flavors, and the general umami feel leave your taste buds satisfied and craving for more. I love the Jamdown Jerk Chicken Wings and Oxtail with fried plantains, rice and peas, and steamed cabbage. The salmon cakes and grits are amazing too. I could talk about soul food in Memphis for days. My all-time favorite is having dinner with my family with my mom on the Sunday after church.
By the way, City Tasting Box just has a special collection called. released The majority box To commemorate Juniteenth.

I love going to Negril BK in Brooklyn. It serves Jamaican food in a sleek upscale style. When I go to Negril BK with friends, we all get our favorite dishes, namely braised oxtail, curry goat and jerk meatball and share plates. Every time I go, I go full, happy and super satisfied.
Gocha’s in Atlanta has some of the best brunch around. The fish and grits are what I like the most, but everything on the menu is a winner. The fish is crispy, flaky, and seasoned just right, the belts are creamy and buttery. You can’t go wrong.
Fixn’s Soul Kitchen in Sacramento always has a long line. It’s worth the wait. I always start with which flavor of Kool-Aid I want: red or purple? Then I have the smothered chicken, the sauce is rich and smooth. The service is excellent and the decor makes you feel at home with your grandmother.
