Austin ISD starts school tomorrow, and you may be looking for last minute ways to celebrate the big student first day. Adeina Anderson from Creative Lifestyles came to us this morning to talk to us about DIY and must-haves for back to school.
Top 5 must-have items for starting school
1. A cool water bottle – Number one on the back-to-school list was a Hydro Flask water bottle. Not only is it number one on the list of must-haves for back to school, it’s also number one on the list of things kids lose.
2. A great backpack – Let the kids choose it, but make sure it suits the school and child’s needs.
3. Bentgo lunch box – The Bentgo Box was number 2 for starting school. It’s a version of the bento box found in sushi restaurants. Each food has its own little place and is not mixed with other items. It’s perfect for healthy meals and both parents and children will love this one. The children eat a healthy meal with things they like. These Bentgo lunch boxes make life easier for mom and dad. You can prepare it in advance and get the kids out the door and to school a lot easier.
4th Hand sanitizer – Staying clean and safe is important to all of us. But things are different for parents who are sending their children back to school. Hand sanitizer, towels, and tissues all fell under number 3. You can even create a small bag with all of these items so they’re easy to find.
5. Crazy funny stickers – This is one thing I was very excited to see on the back to school list. I loved stickers when I was in school. It was a great way to personalize your stuff. It was also a great way to keep track of what was yours and your friends’. I found some fun stickers, and I found some great quote stickers. The quote stickers are perfect as inspiration for the kids, especially in the first few weeks back to school.
How to make these clothes last longer
That was such a fun project for me. I remember when my child grew from year to year it mostly grew up and not out. I added a few inches to his clothes and it was a great cash indulgence, even if it only lasted a few months. I’m known as the no-sew girl, but if you know how to sew it might be easier to do with a sewing machine.
Items needed
· No sewing glue
· Do not sew any adhesive strips
· Hot glue gun
· Flannel fabric
· Top
· Funny materials that the kids will like
· Scissors
· Ideas for after-school snacks
Directions
1. Add some lace trim to the bottoms of girls ‘shorts and bottoms of girls’ shirts by using hot glue, fabric glue, or binding tape.
2. For the boys’ clothing I cut strips of flannel and hemmed a hem and glued it to the inside of the jeans and the inside of the shirt.
3. Be sure to let the children choose the lace and flannel so they can look forward to wearing the clothes. The girls may also love the flannel as it is really fashionable this year.
How to create your own Back to School Kindercone
Creating the back-to-school kids cone is a great way to surprise your child with their school supplies. You can make it as big or small as you want. This is a very inexpensive craft that you can make out of different types of paper. I used card stock, but you could use construction paper or even newsprint.

Directions
1. Glue 4 pieces of paper together and seal all ends.
2. Roll the taped paper into a cone.
3. Glue the cone in place.
4. Cut off the tip of the cone to level it out.
5. Place 3-4 pieces of tissue paper in the cone and tape the sides to hold it in place.
6. Fill the cone with school supplies, snacks and games or toys.
7. Tie a bow with the ribbon around the tissue paper to seal it.
8. You can also let the children decorate their cones with stickers or paint.
