CHAMPAGNE, Fig .– Illinois volleyball student Megan Cooney added another honor to her collection when she was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Northeast All region, the organization said on Tuesday, Dec. 7.
Most recently, Cooney was named the All Big Ten First Team and helped lead Illinois to its third NCAA regional appearance under head coach Chris Tamas this season. The “Iron Woman” of Illinois volleyball became the program’s career leader with 546 sets and third all-time with 147 games in her five-year career, including starting all 33 competitions that season.
The CoSIDA Academic All-District Second-Team-Honored 2021 is second in the team with 376 kills for 3.03 kills per set with a hit rate of 0.267 and with 17 kills in the second round victory of the Illinois over the number 7 of the Topeka. A Kentucky, Kansas native moved over 1,500 kills in her career. She also ranks third on the team with 282 digs and 83 blocks, while she is fourth with 29 service aces in the season.
Cooney and the Illinois will resume NCAA tournament play Thursday, December 9th as they travel to Austin, Texas to play the regional semifinals against 10th-seeded Nebraska. The first serve is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. CT on ESPNU.
