Delivery robots will be on the road in Austin starting Monday

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Robots will roll through Austin starting Monday, making grocery deliveries in the South Congress area and throughout downtown.

Austin Transportation Department officials say the company behind the robots, Refraction AI, will launch a fleet of 10 robots.

ATD officials add the robots ride the bike path unless there isn’t one. Then they drive on the main road. The robots are monitored by a person who drives with the robot. Officials said it was required under state law to ensure safety.

The robots are also remotely controlled – not automated – which means someone can control the robots remotely. While the robots operate in the city, the local traffic officials collect data and decide if they need to implement additional regulations.

According to ATD, the robots can hold up to seven shopping bags in their delivery compartment. The robots don’t just deliver restaurant orders and more. Later on Monday morning, the company will publish the list of companies participating in the program. Transportation officials say this could change the future of deliveries.

“I think it can ultimately really change the mobility landscape if it catches on, and with enough growth it will be able to replace some of the journeys currently made by SOVs or single vehicles,” said Jacob Culberson, the transportation division manager for mobility services.

ATD officials said anyone with problems or questions can contact 311.
