The Michael & Susan Dell Foundation donates millions to help fight homelessness in central Texas. The nonprofit, which is partly led by Dell Computers founder and Texas billionaire Michael Dell, is pledging $ 38 million to fight the cause, the majority of which will be used to build tiny homes in Travis County.
Most of the funding will come from the Austin-based nonprofit Mobile Loaves and Fishes. According to a press release, the Dell Foundation is donating $ 36.6 million to Multiplying Goodness of the MLF – Community First! Village Expansion, a capital campaign to add approximately 1,400 additional tiny homes and service buildings to its lauded Community First! Village campus in Austin Far East.
The $ 36.6 million gift from the Dell Foundation is helping MLF achieve a significant portion of its overall $ 150 million goal.
In addition, US $ 1 million Matching Funds will go to Foundation Communities for the construction of 100 units on the Burleson property at Community First! Village and $ 400,000 will go to LifeWorks to provide permanent housing for young people who have become homeless.
“As Austin grows, caring for the most vulnerable in our communities is more important than ever,” said Susan Dell, co-founder and chairman of the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, in the press release. “By coming together as a community, we can give the homeless in central Texas the dignity they deserve through stable housing and the opportunity to re-experience community.”
Founded in 1998 by Alan Graham, MLF began as a trucking service providing food and relief supplies to the homeless population of Austin. Twenty-three years later, it offers mobile services seven days a week, 365 days a year and operates Community First! Village, a 51-acre tiny home neighborhood that offers accommodation, support services and jobs for the formerly homeless.
“We believe everyone deserves a chance,” said Michael Dell in a press release. “But it is not easy to find the way to a stronger future without a safe place to live. With stable living space and a supportive community, people can create a better future.”
With an estimated net worth of $ 51.1 billion, Michael Dell is the 18th richest American and the third richest Texan behind Tesla’s Elon Musk and Walmart heiress Alice Walton, according to Forbes. Dell’s net worth rose $ 15.6 billion during the pandemic, according to a report by Yahoo.
Forbes also estimates that Dell has donated $ 1.8 billion to charitable causes over the course of his life, the majority of which was donated through the Dell Foundation, run by the tech scion and his wife, Susan.
