Austin Film Society: Doc Days

Four days of new documentaries this week before the Austin Film Festival light up the AFS screens and bring fresh non-fiction cinema from around the world – and opportunities for the audience to meet with guest filmmakers. The long weekend comes to life on Thursday with Todd Haynes’ The Velvet Underground, a lively exploration of the forces that created one of the world’s most enduring bands, and includes a live virtual Q&A with director Haynes after the screening, hosted by AFS- Founder Richard Linklater. This white flash of light is followed by Bernadette Weigenstein’s The Conductor, Carlos Corrals Dirty Feathers, Writing With Fire by Sushmit Ghosh and Rintu Thomas, Roberto Salinas ‘Cuban Dancer, Jonas Poher Rasmussen’s brilliantly animated Flee, Drew Xanthopoulos’ Fathom, Inside the Red Brick Wand by documentary filmmakers from Hong Kong; and the series ends on Sunday night with The Rescue by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin about the rural Thai soccer team trapped in a cave in 2018.

Zach Theater: Into the woods

The fairytale masterpiece by composer Stephen Sondheim comes to life outdoors in a contemporary reinterpretation for the strange and pandemic-influenced times of today. The musical surrounds you and uses Zach’s architecture and nature in surprising ways: Rapunzel lets her hair fall from the pot balcony, Cinderella loses her slipper on the stairs and the milk-white cow sculpture moans to life with Jack and his beanstalk. Oh, to be in the middle of it!

Until November 7th, Tuesday to Sunday, 7:30 p.m.
Zach Theater, 202 S. Lamar
