“To me, Austin is like Texas New Orleans, with the food, the music, except there are hills and trees,” Charles Duffy told KVUE.
AUSTIN, Texas – An Austin evacuees from Hurricane Ida received good news Wednesday afternoon. Charles Duffy told KVUE his power was back on.
He is one of hundreds of thousands who waited for their electricity to be restored before returning to Louisiana.
In cell phone footage Duffy shared with KVUE, you can see his New Orleans apartment the day after Hurricane Ida. We hear Duffy describe the damage.
“The ceiling collapsed in the other room last night. I went in, it was leaking all over the place. I could see it sag,” he said.
Whole parts of the ceiling lay on the floor. His things and his glass were strewn everywhere.
Even so, Duffy knows the damage could have been worse.
“This is not as bad as it could have been,” he said.
Hours earlier, rain and howling winds heralded the arrival of Hurricane Ida.
“The later you got, closer to eight, nine, was really the point where you heard the constant howling gusts of wind.
Duffy lives in the South Seventh Ward near the French Quarter. It wasn’t hit as hard as the lower churches.
But Ida has lost power to hundreds of thousands of residents and businesses in and near New Orleans. That was why Duffy called his brother in Austin for help.
Steve Duffy needed extra time to drive to Crescent City.
“It took me about 10 to 10.5 hours to drive there and that pretty much goes straight through,” said Steve Duffy.
Charles Duffy has been in Austin for a week and a half, making the most of his second home.
“To me, Austin is like Texas New Orleans, with the food, the music culture, except you have hills and trees,” said Charles Duffy.
He is enjoying his time now because his road to recovery is long. He is expected to leave for New Orleans on Saturday.
